It is the season for a romantic walk across the city's hilltops, affording a breathtaking view of the city's snow-covered roofs, domes and towers. The pealing of countless church bells reminds us that Christmas is near. After descending back down to the city, the merry bustling on the Salzburg Christmas Market fills us with a cosy, warm feeling and wakes fond childhood memories. The smell of punch and toasted almonds, hot roasted chestnuts and freshly baked apples envelopes our noses; the vendors' gingerbread hearts, Nativity figures, Christmas tree ornaments, toys and warm pullovers are irresistible.
The Christmas fair in the beautiful Cathedral Square and Residence Square, with stalls, shops and buskers.

with choirs and pastoral plays performed on the steps of the Cathedral.
The Christmas Market at the Mirabell Square

Musical programmes with horn ensembles and men’s choirs are performed in front of Mirabell Castle on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 17.15.
Christmas delicacies can also be found at the Christmas Market at the Karajan Square, in Salzburg’s downtown.
Each Advent (1 –24 Dec) weekend and on December 8, a romantic Advent Market is held in the Hohensalzburg Fortress courtyard high above old Salzburg. 10.00 – 18.00
Hellbrunn Palace hosts a charming Christmas Market every Thursday and Fridays from 13.00 – 20.00 , Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 10.00 to 20.00 Christmas Eve from 10.00 – 14.00
Also the Sterngarten, am Bahnhof and next to Church St. Leonhard featuring local arts and crafts, charming gifts. Romantic sleigh rides, manger with animals, etc
