Salzburg Advent in Salzburg

23 Nov - 26 Dec 2017

It’s very Christmassy in Salzburg

The tradition and ambiance of Salzburg’s Christmas market make an ideal setting to start off the Christmas season. Every year visitors are enchanted by the charm of Cathedral Square, the traditional booths, the strings of light and the quality of the diversified items on sale. Come and enjoy some of the magic this year: from traditional handicrafts, fine baked goods, aromatic tree ornaments and various objet d’art for the Christmas season. Salzburg’s Christmas market is a feast for all the senses: the delicious scent of mulled wine wafts around booths adorned with precious, decorative, old and new items. Performances by traditional Salzburg choirs and children’s school groups lure a crowd of visitors year after year. The market will be opened by the archbishop on the 1st Saturday in Advent right after the blessing of the Advent wreaths.

A hidden pre-Christmas haven

A small, pre-Christmas haven is tucked between the buildings in the Sterngarten between Getreidegasse and Griesgasse: the "Stern Advent Markt“. Far from the hustle and bustle, the market’s unparalleled charm invites visitors to stroll along its booths. For the tenth time, traditional handicrafts can be admired and purchased in the artistic setting. In addition to art and handicrafts, an attractive entertainment program adds to the pre-Christmas spirit. One of the traditional market’s special features: proceeds are personally donated to the needy. visit

Krampus and Perchten Runs
Perchten and Krampusses in many different styles and shapes can be seen throughout the Bavarian and Austrian alpine region during the winter season. They are frightening and not very appealing to the eye.
Krampus is the untamed, shaggy spirit that accompanies St. Nicholas. Krampusses usually roam in larger groups. Their traditional costumes and masks are elaborately handcrafted. Krampusses can usually be encountered on and a few days before December 6.

Perchten are wild pagan spirits widespread throughout the Austrian and Bavarian region. The appear alone or in groups, especially on three specific winter nights, called the "rough nights," i.e. the night before St. Nicholas (December 6), before the winter solstice (December 22) and before Epiphany (January 6). They carry bells and other loud instruments to dispel the winter.

The different traditional Krampus and Perchten customs have blended into one in many regions.

‘Silent Night' Celebrations
The world’s most famous Christmas carol (available in over 300 languages around the globe), will have its 190th anniversary. Written on Christmas Eve 1818 and performed for the first time during the Christmas service in Oberndorf. Joseph Mohr, the lyricist, was born December 11th 1792 in Steingasse (right bank of the Salzach), baptized (just like Mozart) at Salzburg Cathedral and spent his childhood and school years in Salzburg. He handed the lyrics over to Franz Xaver Gruber on December 24th 1818, who composed the music for two solo voices, choir and guitar accompaniment.
