Advent Fairytale in Vienna
2012 dates and details to be confirmed, here is a taste of what was on offer last year
12th November to 24th December 2011
' Magic of Advent in Vienna' will once again enchant its visitors in front and inside the Vienna City Hall. In the very heart of Vienna between City Hall and Burgtheater you may experience the most wonderful winter fairytale the former Imperial City has to offer.
Embedded in Vienna's historical city centre on the magnificent Ringstrasse this traditional Viennese Christmas market mediates a unique flair. Visitors will find the most tasteful Christmas decorations, gifts for all generations and 'Viennese specialities' at the market with the brightly shining Christmas tree.
The most delightful surprise awaits you in the park in front of the City Hall: wonderful trees decorated with red hearts, angels, lanterns and much more. Christmas plays are performed at the Punch and Judy show, and there is a lot to see and hear in the small pavilions. Dwarfs, teddy bears and other figures fascinate and enchant children and grown-ups alike.
'Christkindls Werkstatt', which is located in the City Hall, is a truly marvellous place: thousands of children make cookies and handicraft all kinds of Christmas presents.
Amidst the Christmas cheer in front of the City Hall you may see the Vienna Christ Child late in the afternoon. Or it is visiting some old people's homes or hospitals to bring a little bit of Christmas spirit to all those who cannot come to the Magic of Advent for themselves.
Opening times
Sun - Thur 09.00 - 21.00
Fri - Sat 09.00 - 22.00
Christmas Eve 09.00 - 17.00

Wienerlied Advent calendar
2011
A musical Advent calendar travels throughout Vienna: with live concerts from 1 December in the 1st district to 23 December in the 23rd district. The focus is on the Wienerlied or Vienna song.
Each evening, there are encounters of the Wienerlied with other cultures and art forms at a high artistic level.
This singing, ringing Advent calendar has a few surprises in store - a tip for music fans who are on the search for something special and unusual, far removed from commercial music.
The stages are mainly long-established inns and typical Viennese bistros. The ambience ranges from dignified and venerable to trendy and casual.
Look forward to lively Advent evenings with Karl Hodina & Rudi Koschelu, Ernst Molden, the Vienna Tschuschen Band, Wolfram Berger & the New Vienna Concert Schrammeln, Otto Lechner, Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird, Der Nino aus Wien, 9dlinger & den Geringfügig Beschäftigten and many more.
