The best Christmas Market in England - its official!

In 2012, VisitEngland came to Bath Christmas Market and awarded the event accreditation as a quality assured visitor attraction - the only Christmas Market to have gained the quality marque! So if you are thinking where you might do your Christmas shopping, remember that the best Christmas Market in the country is right on your doorstep!

The 18 day event is the biggest Christmas Shopping event in the South West region which consists of more than 150 beautifully decorated wooden chalets, each selling a variety of high-quality products such as Christmas decorations, gifts, toys, clothes, household and festive food. Bath Christmas Market has a wonderful romantic atmosphere, with tempting fare and gentle entertainment befitting the time of year, helping to build the anticipation of the celebrations to come. Set in the picturesque streets and squares surrounding Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths, there couldn't be a more perfect setting for a Christmas Market in the UK.

To further Bath's accreditation as being the best Christmas Market in the country, last year Bath Tourism Plus were delighted to have been chosen to receive the Quality Rose Marque from National Tourist Board VisitEngland under the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme. Bath is the only Christmas Market in the country to receive such an accolade.

Located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage city, the Christmas Market is perfect for visitors to enjoy all that the city has to offer - a wonderful mix of high street and designer shops, fascinating attractions and warm, inviting cafes and bars.

Christmas in Bath starts with the Bath Christmas Lights switch-on, signifying to most the start of the Christmas shopping. But there are many other wonderful festive treats in store in the run up to Christmas. Returning for a second year, Bath on Ice is wonderful addition to the city's winter festivities and there are candlelit carol concerts, special exhibitions, shows and music events. Why not treat yourself to a pre-Christmas break to really get yourself in the spirit?

What else is on

Bath on Ice, Bath’s festive outdoor real ice rink is back by popular demand with a brand new pizza chalet and Ice Lounge bar and cafe. This year will also feature a range of special theme nights including live music and ’Dates on Ice’.

Located in the spectacular parkland setting of Royal Victoria Park beneath the world famous Royal Crescent in central Bath, the rink attracts local residents and visitors from all over the region.

Opening on Friday 21st November visitors and groups will be also able to enjoy a new indoor Ice Lounge bar and café serving freshly made pizzas, perfect for Christmas parties. The heated indoor lounge area will be designed to create an ideal setting for people to sit and enjoy the skating.

Director Simon Smith said: “Judging by the comments we have received via our customer survey and on our Facebook page our visitors love the whole skating experience. This year however we want to provide even better facilities for individuals and especially groups so that they can enjoy a skate and soak up the atmosphere. Increased and improved catering services will offer the chance for a post skate mulled wine or maybe a latte and a slice of pizza. Feedback from clients has also prompted us to introduce special theme nights including singles nights, live music and Christmas fancy dress plus more online booking offers and incentives.”

The rink will be open from 10am until 9pm daily (except Christmas Day) from the 21st November until the 4th January. Sessions last for one-hour with skate hire included.

So come on, get your skates on, and glide on down to Bath on Ice.

American Museum

This Christmas our Period Rooms will come to life as we recreate scenes from popular fiction set in America. Visitors will be familiar with many of the classic tales that have inspired us, such as Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But we have also included modern classics. Our earliest room is dedicated to recreating a scene from Celia Rees' Witch Child. Written in the year 2000, this book has been translated into over 25 languages, and is required reading in many secondary schools.

Our Christmas season is always a favourite time for families to visit. Every year we have a children's trail and this year is no different. Bertie the Bookworm loves a good book and he has crawled into our Period Rooms to enjoy the stories first hand. See if you can spot him!

One of the things that has visitors returning year after year to see our Christmas displays is the rich array of handmade decorations throughout the Museum. Inspired by ‘book art' and a monochrome palette, this year's designs promise to be as creative as those of previous years. We look forward to welcoming you to the Museum during this year's Christmas displays.
