Location:
Oxfordshire - Blenheim Palace in 2008

Blenheim Palace offers a spine tingling day out this October half term with plenty of Halloween Horrors and special Children’s Tours to entertain (or frighten!) the whole family. During a week of spooky entertainment Blenheim Palace’s visiting Undertaker will recount ghostly goings-on, bringing grisly tales of horror to life throughout the week leading up to Halloween, 20th – 28th October.

Stand in the impressive Great Court and be gripped as Blenheim Palace’s colourful past comes alive through fascinating stories. What was here before the Palace was built and how does the past still haunt the Park today? Has the opening of our new visitor experience ‘Blenheim Palace: The Untold Story’ and Grace Ridley’s ghost unleashed other spirits from the past? Do the bustling skirts of the 1st Duchess still rustle through the halls or the 8th Duke’s experiments crackle in the ether?

As you look out over the lake, learn about the Woodstock Lodge where Elizabeth I was imprisoned and find out about the ghosts that spooked Oliver Cromwell’s troops during the Civil War. Our creepy Undertaker has investigated all the stories and will give his expert opinion on whether they are fact or fiction. Inside the Palace Spooky Children’s Tours will run throughout the week.

There’s also plenty more to enjoy in the park. Take a trip to the Pleasure Gardens on our ghost train, where ghoulish face painting will be available. Here you can challenge the kids to a game of giant draughts and chess, but don’t get lost in the Marlborough Maze as you never know who you might come face to face with. From 22nd – 26th October at 12.30pm and 2.30 pm, Oxfordshire Story teller Marguerite Osborne will be telling tales of ghosts from around the world!

Snow Scene at Blenheim Palace

‘The Spirit of Christmas; past, present & future’ at Blenheim Palace

15 Nov – 14 Dec 2008

The Christmas season is a magical time for your visitors to enjoy Britain’s Greatest Palace at its finest. Inspired by the much loved Dickens tale A Christmas Carol, the spirit of Christmas past, present and future will be reflected throughout the Palace. The Great Hall will be decorated with an emphasis on all things Victorian, while in the Saloon the grand table will be set for a Christmas feast as it would be for the present Duke of Marlborough. The Long Library will feature a very special take on what Christmas future might bring, with sparkling silver trees.

Festive entertainment will take place every weekend including Stir-up Sunday on 16th November traditionally held on the Sunday before advent when families take it in turns to stir the pudding and make a wish. Blenheim Palace’s Victorian cook will bring the wonderful tradition of Stir-up Sunday and the Christmas pudding to life. On other weekends during the Christmas season the Palace will be alive with the sounds of carol singing, silver bands and festive storytelling, and on 7th December the Blenheim Singers will perform Handel’s Messiah in the Long Library. Please note seating may be limited.
