Colmar’s Christmas market actually consists of five markets each in different areas of the city and each specialising in different things (La Petite Venise – Toys, Place des Dominicains – Christmas trees, Place Jeanne d’Arc – Food & Drink, Place de l’Ancienne Douane – a mixture of things, inside the Koifhus (the old customs house) – Arts & Antiques). .
The town is beautifully decorated throughout the Advent period and has stunning illuminations. Guided tours are available, visiting some of the town’s old half-timbered houses and watching the lights as they come on in the evening. A popular feature is the gigantic letter box on Place des Six Montagnes Noires where children can post their letters to Father Christmas.
