Munich's traditional Christmas market - whose roots go back to the 14th century - is held on Marienplatz in the heart of the city centre. The justly popular Kripperlmarkt, one of the largest in Germany to specialise in cribs and other Nativity accessories, is a short walk away on nearby Rindermarkt. There is alpine Christmas music live from the town hall balcony every day. The "heaven workshop" offers creative activities for children free of charge.

Things to see and do in Munich

Bayerisches National Museum
While you’re in Munich, stop by this leading museum to get a comprehensive look at the history of the region. There’s everything from folklore to art, suits of armour to spectacular paintings depicting classical scenes. When it comes to tourist attractions in Munich, this is a must-see if you want a bit of background.

Frauenkirche
You simply can’t miss it, nor would you want to. This enormous church lies at the heart of the city and its spectacular twin towers dominate the skyline. The south tower is climbable for much of the year, and offers impressive city views.

Pinakothek der Moderne
This is the largest modern art museum in Germany, and is an architectural work of art in itself. There’s everything from Warhol and Baselitz to Bauhaus and Art Nouveau.

Bavaria Filmstadt
Spend a day at this theme park devoted to one of Germany’s earliest film studios, Bavaria Film. There’s everything from a rip-roaring stunt show to a delightfully unhinged 4D cinema. The kids will love it.

Kino am Pool Swimming and cinema all in one. Take the kids for a swim then relax poolside for the film. Simple but effective.

English Garden
A funny name for a huge park in the middle of a German city, we know. This ‘garden’ is actually bigger than Central Park in New York and is full of great things to do. How about renting a paddleboat, sitting in one of its many beer gardens, or just simply going for a stroll? The choice is yours.
