Thurn und Taxis Palace in Regensburg

The Thurn und Taxis palace in UNESCO - World heritage city of Regensburg in the heart of Bavaria is the setting for one of Germany’s most atmospheric Christmas markets. Stalls aglow in the light from a myriad Christmas lights, candles, lanterns and flaming torches and the picturesque backdrop of this wonderful palace bestow the Christmas market with a very special flair.

The inner courtyard is the temporary home to a magnificently decorated Christmas tree reaching high into the winter sky whilst the stalls are abuzz with business as turners, blacksmiths, candle makers, crib makers, glass blowers, lantern makers and the famous “Hutmacher am Dom“ ply their unique and unusual wares.

Her Highness Princess Gloria of Thurn und Taxis and her family often grace the assembled gathering with their presence as they wend their way through the throng trying the occasional speciality as they go: wild boar kebab, freshly smoked salmon, an Upper Palatinate speciality of Christmas onions as well as hot punch and mulled wine in all shapes and forms

Adding to the festive atmosphere are the dulcet tones of choirs, orchestras and musical ensembles. In Germany the bearer of gifts is not Father Christmas but the Christ Child. He is a welcome sight for children of all ages whilst old-fashioned roundabouts and Punch and Judy shows all add to the excitement.
