At Christmas, Edinburgh Sparkles….
Festivities begin 27 November 2008 and go through to 4 Jan 2009 - full details of programme will be here soon
In winter, Edinburgh, one of Europe’s most romantic cities, sparkles with over a month of festivities. Bursting to life with parades, fireworks, markets, Christmas lights, entertainment and the iconic Winter Wonderland, Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations draw thousands of locals and visitors every year.
The festivities are launched on Light Night when 200,000 lights are switched on across Edinburgh, creating a magnificent sparkling cityscape for which Edinburgh’s Christmas is now renowned. The Christmas markets open for business on Light Night, The gluhwein flows as the German and Christmas markets open for business, and for the first time, there will be a Highland Village-style market selling top of the range food, drink clothing and jewellery from all over Scotland. There are various other markets dotted around the city offering a broad range of local and international crafts and produce to delight and satisfy all the senses.

In the build up to Christmas, there is an exciting range of other activities across the city for all ages, with the beautiful Norwegian Advent Carol Concert at St Giles’ Cathedral an outdoor Nativity Carol Service and Green Christmas at the Royal Botanic Gardens, with a fascinating winter exhibition and magical grotto as well as the opportunity to make cards and decorations (first four weekends in December). The weekend of the 13th -14th December marks the return of the annual Santa Weekend, a huge favorite with all ages. The weekend not only marks the arrival of Santa and his reindeer to Princes Street Gardens, but also includes the famous Santa Run around Princes Street Gardens on 16 December. The Great Scottish Santa Run sees thousands of Edinburgh locals and visitors dress up as Santa and run, clamber and skip along the 1.5km course to raise money for ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, a charity for children with terminal illnesses.
Edinburgh comes to life at Christmas. The city sparkles and it is a memorable destination for romantic getaways, cultural explorations, and with Harvey Nichols and an array of independent boutiques and shops in addition to the seasonal markets, for Christmas shopping.
