Luzern Lucerne Christmas Market

13 - 21 Dec 2016

Christmas stroll
Get caught up in the mysteries of the Christ Child and Santa Claus on our Christmas stroll through Lucerne.

As you ramble through the city of lights, you will learn how pine trees found their way into our living rooms, since when Advent calendars have helped shorten the days until Christmas and who hangs the holiday lights above our alleyways.

You will also hear meaningful and funny stories of Lucerne's December customs. Not to be missed: a stroll through the Christmas market and a look at the life-sized nativity scene. We'll help you shorten the wait until Christmas!

"Live on Ice"
24 Nov - 2 Jan 2017

This winter, the light artist Gerry Hofstetter will be presenting "Live on Ice" Lucerne for the fifth time.

When Queen Victoria went to Lucerne for a month in August 1868, she wrote to Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli that ’the Queen’s health and nerves require a short interval of bracing mountain air and comparative quiet or she must break down completely and, if the public will not take her as she is, she must give all up, and give it up to the Prince of Wales’. Now, 140 years later, Lucerne is still a fine place in which to soothe the troubled spirit. It is not a very big town, having a population of 60,000; nor is it notable for its gaiety. But the sheer beauty of its setting - a magnificent, meandering lake surrounded by soft green hills and, beyond them, the snow-capped peaks of some of Switzerland’s loveliest mountains - is hugely exhilarating.
